That's So Julia

Self Respect in Style

There was a time when getting dressed wasn’t about keeping up with trends or impressing strangers on the internet. It was about dignity. Pride in yourself. Self-respect.

People didn’t dress well because they were vain or trying to look better than others. They dressed well because it reflected how they valued themselves. Even in ordinary moments such as running errands, working around the house, or taking a simple stroll; there was care and intention in their appearance. A neatly pressed dress, a well-chosen scarf, polished shoes, these were all small ways of honoring oneself and the world around you. And it wasn’t just the clothes, it was also in the personal grooming, simple skincare, neatly styled hair, and a touch of makeup were all part of this mindful self-care, a quiet ritual that said: “I matter. I respect myself.”

I don’t think fashion has to be frivolous. It doesn’t have to be shallow. It doesn’t have to be “vintage.” It can be tasteful. It can be classy. It can be soulful. The clothes we wear tell a story about how we see ourselves, and how we want to move through the world. It is our calling card. A classy coat worn with care, a well-fitted pair of trousers, or a timeless dress isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s a declaration that you matter, that your self-respect matters, and that small rituals of care, whether in dressing, grooming, or applying a favorite lipstick, it can shape your day and your mindset.

For me, this isn’t about rigid rules or perfection; it’s about the joy of self-expression and the quiet confidence that comes from feeling put together. Taking the time to dress thoughtfully, style your hair, or care for your skin can shift your whole mood. It’s a form of self-love that never goes out of style, a practice that nurtures your dignity and your sense of presence.

And there’s something else I love about it: dressing with intention and caring for yourself encourages mindfulness. You’re not just throwing on the first thing you find or skipping your usual routines. You’re choosing. You’re considering how the world sees you… and more importantly, how you see yourself. It’s a small daily ritual that reinforces care, respect, self-awareness, and the simple pleasure of feeling good in your own skin.

So let’s reclaim this vintage value. Not to impress. Not to compete. But to carry ourselves with dignity, respect, and a touch of timeless grace. To remember that caring for your appearance, your grooming, and your overall presentation isn’t shallow, but instead it’s a gentle, daily act of honoring who you are.

How do you bring self-respect and dignity into your everyday style? What small gestures, whether in your wardrobe, grooming, or self-care rituals, make you feel more confident, mindful, and intentional?

  1. Well done Julia, looks fantastic. I do think that I was born a generation or two later than I was intended. It’s great to look back on better times and maybe click my Rubie slippers three times and return to where I belong

    1. Thank you so much, John! I know that feeling all too well. I try to think that maybe we’re here in this decade to help others find the beauty in the past like we have. It might be silly but it helps me anyway. 😅
